The death toll in Maui stood at 89 on Saturday night and was expected to climb even further, according to Gov. Many survivors in the region were relying on each other in the wake of the disaster. “Where is the government?”The emergency response in Lahaina, a historic seaside town in western Maui, is “a combination” of efforts by authorities and private citizens, the Maui County mayor, Richard T. Bissen Jr., said. It remains unsafe for residents to return because of toxic fumes and other dangers, Mr. Green said. “We are going to do some reviews so we can make things safer going forward,” Mr. Green said.

CNN —Musician Mick Fleetwood of the famed group Fleetwood Mac said his restaurant, Fleetwood’s on Front St, in Lahaina, Hawai’i has been lost due to the wildfires raging there. The “older neighborhood” of Lahaina, an economic hub in western Maui that drew millions of tourists each year, is destroyed, Maui County Mayor Richard T. Bissen Jr. said in a Thursday afternoon news conference. And with power and cell service out in western Maui, officials don’t know how many people who may have tried to escape are still missing. As of Friday, this week’s wildfires in Hawai’i have killed 55, in what could be the largest natural disaster in the state’s history, the governor said. “We also have many hundreds of homes destroyed, and that’s going to take a great deal of time to recover from.”

Wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui have caused widespread devastation this week, especially in the town of Lahaina where homes and businesses have been wiped out and hundreds of families have been displaced. Dozens of people have also been killed in the wildfires, which led President Joe Biden to approve a disaster declaration so the state could receive federal aid to assist in the recovery. Most of the fires, fueled partly by strong winds associated with Hurricane Dora hundreds of miles away, have not yet been contained, according to Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. Hawaii's Big Island has also been impacted by wildfires.
